We had to create our own mythological animal (you know like a Griffon). It was in April, so I must have had Easter on my mind because what I came up with has a major Easter bent to it.
Chickit
Once upon a time there was an animal that had ears like a rabbit, a head like a chick, with whiskers, and a body like a chick, feet like a chick, and a tail like a rabbit. He was all white except for pink eyes and pink ears. The Chickit hatches, full grown, from an egg, once every decade to take the place of the one before it.
All year the Chickit lays eggs to deliver at Easter time.
The eggs are symbolic of rebirth. The Chickit is symbolic of the completed cycle of life.

Christmas Stockings
Not positive of the year on this one. It's on the same brown paper that my third grade stories were on, so I'm assuming third grade. Again, not a great composition, but worth typing up. I like that I had no idea how to spell Gretel and spelled it differently every time.
The Christmas Stocking
Once upon a time there was a boy and a girl named Hansel and Gretle and they had a nice forest, but they were poor and their stepmother was very mean, lazy, and fat. The reason they were so poor was that the stepmother had spent almost all of their money buying food for herself.
And when Christmas was bout to come, they cut down one tall tree and made four stockings one for mom, dad, Hansel, and Grettle
And one night (the night before Christmas) Grettlle's stocking started doing some magic. It started to fill the other stockings and then it filled its self. And the next morning when they went into the living room what a surprise they had! And the mother was nice from then on.
THE
END!

Word Origins (Third grade?)
This one has no date on it, but it's a mimeograph paper like most of the others from third grade. Not my best composition, but it made me laugh when I re-read it, so here it is.
How We Got the Word "Leprechaun"
Once upon a time there was a little man and his name was Haun. He didn't have a last name. One day Haun went for a walk and he met two other little men and their names were Lep and Rec. They decided to make a word from their names and that's how we got the word Leprechaun.

Fourth Grade Cinquains
More poetry. This time it was cinquains. This is the most simple form: one word in line 1, two in line 2, three in line 3, four in line 4, and a one-word synonym of the first line in line 5. They have no titles. This was in Jan 1984.

Sky animals
Jumping all about
Wanting to go outside
Felines

Frisky fellows
Running after balls
Wishing they could throw
Hounds
Canaries
Beautiful singers
Gaily singing tunes
Feeling oh so happily

Fun animals
Play like children
They give love willingly

Fourth Grade Haiku
Another poetry assignment. This time Haiku. I drew pictures next to each of them - don't know if that was part of the assignment or if I did it because I was bored.
The picture next to this one is a purple mountain, with pink snow on it, and a sunset.
Snowflakes falling down
Blanket on the mountain peaks.
Sunset. Snow is pink.
The picture next to this one is of 2 birds on tree branches. One is brown with a red breast, the other is blue.
Hi, robin red breast.
How are you today, blue jay?
What is that you say?
The next one has a picture of a green grasshopper facing away from a bunch of little bugs.
Busy ants working
Grasshoppers playing leapfrog
Winter's on the way.

Fourth Grade poem - Uno
We had to write a poem in Fourth grade about something we liked to do. This is what I turned in on 7 Dec 1983:
Uno
Uno is a card game
That I really like to play.
I play it in the evening
And I play it every day.
We play it as a family
My mom my dad and I.
And when my brother joins us
We laugh until we cry.

Hink Pink (in Fourth Grade)
In fourth grade, we were learning about rhyming and one of our assignments was to come up with Hink Pinks. A Hink Pink is two one-syllable words that rhyme that have a silly definition. We had an assignment to come up with some of our own. Here are mine from 3 Dec 1983:
1. Flat Hat - A hat without elevation
2. Bad Lad - A naughty boy
3. Dead Red - A deceased Communist
4. Fast Blast - A quick explosion
5. Slow Blow - A sluggish puff of air
6. Nice Ice - Diamonds
7. Bright Light - Brilliant glare
8. Small Ball - A little sphere
9. Fine Pine - A Christmas tree
10. Boob Tube - A television
11. Hot Pot - A very warm pan
12. Wet Pet - A soggy dog named Rover
13. Long Song - 99 Bottles of Pop on the Wall
14. Cool Tool - Ice pick
At the bottom of my paper I wrote:
I couldn't resist this one even thought it's not a hink pink, but a hinky pinky. Try to figure this out on your own:
What is a Chewbacca snack?
A wookie cookie.
Then later in the year the teacher gave us a Hinky Pinky assignment. So here's what I did in 6 Jan 1984:
1. Wookie Cookie - A Chewbacca snack
2. Funny Money - Counterfeit dollars
3. Kittens Mittens - Gloves for cats
