We moved to Texas between third and fourth grade. I didn't like school so much at first - I knew the Pledge of Allegiance, but had no idea what the words were to "Texas, Our Texas." The classroom was unlike any I'd seen before: it was 1 HUGE room with 4 classes and 4 teachers whose desks were in the middle of the room. I was glad when we moved in to our new house and I got to go to a different school the next year. The only thing I really liked about that school: it had its own planetarium. I remember watching a live solar eclipse in that room.
Anyway - in fourth grade, they taught us about poetry. As is always the case, we had an assignment to write a poem. In this case it was about flight.
A Trip Through the Stars (Dec 15, 1983)
Have you ever seen a TV set
When the screen has turned to fuzz?
Most of the time it starts
When the TV starts to buzz.
It's like traveling though space and time.
And you feel like you're about to take
A fourth dimension climb.
And all of a sudden your sense take over
After you hear a bark from Rover.
Here's another from the same time period:
The Funniest Thing Ever Happened to Me (1983)
It was late at night
When I awoke with a fright.
An eclipse of the moon
Was occurring too soo,
So I was in a hurry
And my mind was way too blurry.
I had slept too long,
So my shoes I put on wrong,
Because it was too dark to see
Just what I was doing to me.
This one is dated 1982 - which makes it third grade - but I'll include it anyway because it's a poem.
Halloween Night (1982)
It's Halloween Night,
TIme for a fright.
Time for the witches, goblins, and ghouls,
Parties at homes and parties at schools.
You'll see lots of costumes
And one that's a witch.
Better watch out, she might use a switch.
Better run, better hide!
Don't stand there and abide.
Better take cover
You don't want to be another
Thing with a wart like a frog.
