A Legend in Fourth Grade

We learned about legends in fourth grade as well. I remember why I picked to write about Mount Timpanogos. In the backyard of our house in Orem, Utah, you could see this mountain. Its outline looks like a woman sleeping. I'm sure there's a real legend about it - especially since one of the mountain's caves has a rock shaped like a heart - but I still haven't looked it up. I missed the mountains when we moved to Dallas, so it was on my mind. Here is my original legend of that mountain. It had to be a page, so I wrote out all the names every time they were used.

Mt. Timpanogos (Fall 1983)
Chief Runningwater and Indian Brave Raincloud didn't want Princess Timpanogos and Indian Brave Greatsalt married. So they prayed to Indian God Allfather to stop the marriage. God Allfather said he would.

When Chief Runningwater was performing the wedding, God Allfather froze Indian Brave Greatsalt. Then Indian Brave Raincloud took his place at the wedding. God Allfather froze Indian Brave Raincloud also. Everyone was frantic because none of them knew what was going on, especially Chief Runningwater.

Then all of a sudden, Indian God Allfather appeared and sad he would take the Princess Timpanogos as his bride. And to everyone's surprise, she refused!

God Allfather got angry, so he unfroze Indian Braves Greatsalt and Raincloud and Princess Timpanogos, he froze in rock instead.

With everyone mourning for the princess, their tears formed the Great Salt Lake. The mountain where the princess lay is called Mt. Timpanogos in her remembrance.

  1. Wow Kay! You wrote so well at such young ages! :o) Very cool stuff here. I can't believe you have your writing still saved.

My mom gave me a whole bunch of stuff she saved for me when I got married, mainly old artwork and report cards. I enjoy those nostalgic moods I get sometimes when I break out the boxes of my past. I can sit there for hours, until my back gets sore, and sift through old notes and pictures from high school.

  2. I decided in 7th grade when we got a computer, that I was going to keep these. I wrote them all up and printed them out and put them in a folder. I've been so busy with other things, that I'd forgotten about this little task I'd given myself. Now that I have a "follower" I guess I should keep it up. ;)
    Thanks Carrie!
